This project begins with a story Justine A. Chambers’ grandmother told her a number of times. A story about dancing on Saturday evenings at The Parkway Ballroom at King Drive and 47th in Bronzeville, on the South Side of Chicago. A weekly ritual performed throughout her teens. Her grandmother’s name is Delores Hutchinson. She is 90 years old. Justine has always felt her grandmother’s love deeply. They are close in a way that is felt and mutually understood, and in this work, she creates a cross-generational echo.

Justine leads a series of free, public dance sessions in the gallery based on these conversations with her grandmother.

The choreography shared in the dance sessions engage collective reiterated actions as a way of making visible and housing a body which has historically been erased. It focuses on Delores and her movements as a site of joy.

Delores has an extensive music collection which spans 75 years. She has created a playlist for the project that you can listen to here.

Justine A. Chambers is a dance artist living and working on the unceded Coast Salish territories of the Squamish, Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Her movement based practice considers how choreography can be an empathic practice rooted in collaborative creation, close observation, and the body as a site of a cumulative embodied archive. Privileging what is felt over what is seen, she works with dances that are already there – the social choreographies present in the everyday. She is Max Tyler-Hite’s mother.

This is the eleventh event in our year-long season dedicated to the questions posed by the work of Trinh T. Minh-ha and how they address art, culture, and society today.
