Abbas Akhavan on his exhibition
Artist Abbas Akhavan sits down with curator Kim Nguyen to share a few thoughts on how time figures in his work, why he's using the ancient building material cob, and what to make of the empty museum vitrines and disarrayed compositions within his exhibition at the Wattis.

Akhavan’s practice ranges from site-specific ephemeral installations to drawing, video, sculpture and performance. The direction of his research has been deeply influenced by the specificity of the sites where he works: the architectures that house them, the economies that surround them, and the people that frequent them. The domestic sphere, as a forked space between hospitality and hostility, has been an ongoing area of research in his practice. More recent works have shifted focus, wandering onto spaces and species just outside the home – the garden, the backyard, and other domesticated landscapes.

Abbas Akhavan (b. 1977; Tehran, Iran) lives and works in Canada. He has had recent solo exhibitions at The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Toronto (2019), Vie D'ange, Montréal (2018), and Museum Villa Stuck, Munich (2017). Group exhibitions include Liverpool Biennial, Liverpool (2018), SALT Galata, Istanbul (2017), Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2016), and Wellcome Collection, London (2016). Recently he was an artist-in-residence at Atelier Calder, Saché (2017), Fogo Island Arts, Fogo Island (2013, 2016, 2019), and Flora: ars+natura, Bogota (2015). Akhavan is the recipient of Kunstpreis Berlin (2012), The Abraaj Group Art Prize (2014), and the Sobey Art Award (2015).
