"The Mantra of Efficiency: From Waterwheel to Social Control," a lecture by Jennifer Alexander
In her book The Mantra of Efficiency: From Waterwheel to Social Control, cultural historian and mechanical engineer Jennifer K. Alexander tries to understand what she calls a “technological orthodoxy”: the belief that all things should act efficiently. In researching the current exhibition, Mechanisms, curator Anthony Huberman spent a lot of time with this book. In this lecture, Prof. Alexander shares her research at the Wattis Institute.

The group exhibition Mechanisms took place in 2017-2018. Click here for images and more information.
