Julia Heyward: Conscious Knocks Unconscious

Julia Heyward, sometimes known by the moniker Duka Delight, is an artist who has consistently strived towards an emotive, textured, and unapologetically demonstrative approach to her preferred medias of video, performance, and photography.

Conscious Knocks Unconscious brings together Heyward’s earliest experiments—spanning the years 1971 to 1984—and tracks a period in which the artist evolved from being a young graduate of the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program, to becoming a prominent figure in New York’s downtown performance scene, and ultimately a key influence and participant in No Wave, the post-punk movement of bands, artists, and film-makers with which she is closely associated.
